Why not a messiah instead of a criminal?
THE EDITOR: I think it is imperative that the population of TT come to the stark realisation that it is not only criminals who are committing crime, it is also we ourselves who flout the law on a daily basis — if we could get away with it. The advertisement “fix me first” is the best advertisement I have seen in a long time. People have opposed it but I say, if we as a population do not follow the laws of the land then we are just as bad as the criminals out there.
We need to send a strong message to those who commit crime that we are a law abiding nation and until we do that we shall see an unprecedented escalation in this country. The gang warfare in Laventille is an imitation of what is going on in Jamaica and the US because they look at cable TV and violent movies, they listen to the gangster rap and other crap which is fed to them on the radio, they imitate the dress wear and footwear and feel “a rank” but they don’t realise that what they are doing is just “following de leader.” Why can’t one of them be a messiah and lead them out of their bondage? Some sections of the society think that if the gangs kill themselves then everything will get back to normal, but what they don’t realise is that there are those coming up behind them, like the fatherless children who will feel the pain and hold a lot of anger and revenge against society. So the problem needs to be solved now. We the citizens of the nation can help solve crime if we only follow the law of the land ourselves.
