Malta Carib, Rotating Equipment Services team up for cycling boost

Phillips Promotions are continuing their efforts to raise the profile of cycling up to that of the other sporting disciplines in Trinidad and Tobago. And joining them in this leg of their drive are Malta Carib and Rotating Equipment Services Limited. Yesterday it was announced that the Rotating Equipment and Malta Carib Cycling Series 2004 will pedal off on January 25 and February 1 and features a $6,500 prize package. Competition will be over eight events, a mix of sprint and endurance races, for juniors, veterans, women, children and unregistered riders. The feature race is a 30-lap main grind for seniors.

The total sponsorship package is $15,000 and yesterday both companies expressed delight at being involved in the venture. It is part of the ongoing assessment period which would facilitate the selection of a team for the West Indies vs the World Cycling Series which begins on January 29. Three local riders are also to participate in an exchange programme with Cuba. Andy Froehlich of Rotating Equipment Services yesterday stated that his company’s contribution to the series which spans two weekends is part of their determination to revive cycling in the region. He also revealed plans for a Caribbean cycling tour to aid in this effort. Brand Officer Malta Carib, Fayola Nicholas said that the series is in keeping with Carib’s alignment with sport and as a result they are pleased to form such a partnerships.

Nicholas went on to state that her company looks forward to the successful efforts of Phillips Promotions this year as they plan a range of cycling events. Registration is $10 for women and children, $20 for juniors and veterans and $25 for the seniors. Phillips Promotions and the Beacon Insurance Limited will launch their Road Safety Cycling Programme for children ages 5-12 with the view of enabling the proper use of the road by young cyclists and teaching proper road protocol.
