Gate falls on Bajan swimmer

BRIDGETOWN: A swimmer from Barbados who successfully crossed the English Channel is in intensive care after a trailer gate fell on his head, his father has said.

Gibbs, 58, swam the English Channel in 11.5 hours on August 20. He was the first Caribbean national to complete the swim. The 21-mile (40 kilometres) channel separates England from France. Gibbs was using a trailer for his tree cutting business on Tuesday when the trailer gate slipped and fell on his head and shoulder, his father Woody Gibbs told The Associated Press by  telephone. He was being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in southern Barbados where he was listed in stable condition. Gibbs won medals in the Pan American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Master Championships. He quit competitive swimming after he successfully made it  across the English Channel.
