Fire aim to blaze Tobago

ARIMA FIRE will be looking to overtake “the Stallions” Caledonia AIA for seventh spot in the T&T Pro League Senior Division when they host the tottering Tobago United at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, Arima from 4 pm today.

The firemen have 30 points from 35 matches, while the lads from the sister isle, who have endured a miserable debut season, are rooted to the bottom spot with 10 points from 33 encounters. But the weekend’s main clash will be at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Sunday, with back-to-back champs CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh meeting W Connection. The seniors will take to the field at 4 pm, two hours after the Under-20 Division clash. The Jabloteh lads, led by former national midfielder Angus Eve, defeated Connection 2-1 on January 17 at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva to retain the title for the second year running. Today’s match will have no bearings on the standings, but it will be the perfect opportunity for either team to conclude the long season with a win.

In related news, Jabloteh widened their gap over Connection in the U-20s to 10 points after a come-from-behind 2-1 win over “the Eastern Lions” Joe Public at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna on Wednesday. Dwight Scott gave the hosts the lead after 11 minutes but Ijaner Mark equalised for Jabloteh in the 44th. Former national youth striker Jerol Forbes scored what turned out to be the winner for Jabloteh in the 53rd.
