Ganga (152 n.o.) pilots PowerGen to big victory

A magnificent unbeaten century by talented opener Sherwin Ganga (152) piloted PowerGen Sports Club to a convincing 154-run victory over Mayo Valley Boys in their Carib Sunday League Third round match played at Mayo yesterday.

The left-handed Ganga blasted eight huge sixes and eight superbly-timed fours as he batted through the innings to finished on the season’s highest limited-overs score. Former national senior allrounder Samuel Badree chipped in with 48 and returned to snap up five wickets for 15 runs. National under 15 captain Jason Mohammed took two for 12 as Mayo were skittled out for 163 in 48 overs. And while arch-rivals PowerGen were demolishing their opponents, defending champion Clico Preysal romped home to a comfortable 77-run victory over Low Cost Munroe Road in their Group B match contested at the Inshan Ali Park, Preysal.

Former England stylish Test player Mark Ramprakash, in his match for Preysal, stamped his class with a brilliant 60 and was supported by Miguel Nedd who made 71 as the 2003 champs amassed 231 for nine wickets in 50 overs. Adesh Dass grabbed five for 54 while Ramesh Singh took two for 59. In reply, Munroe Road made 154 off 48 overs with Adrian Bharath (38) and Anil Barlo (31) the main scorers. Former Trinidad and Tobago senior pacer Eugene Antoine claimed three wickets for 23 runs. W-Connection Wanderers recorded their second victory for the season when they shocked Division One runners-up FCB Clarke Road with a comprehensive 117-run victory at Gilbert Park, Brechin Castle.

Former national leftarm spinner Kishore Lalchan destroyed the Clarke Road team who bowed at 120 all out in 42 overs. Lalchan foxed out four opponents for 36 runs and was supported by former PowerGen teammates Afzal Dean and Atiba Allert who each claimed two wickets each for five and twenty three runs apiece. Despite a brilliant 105 (5x6s, 9x4s) by James Dodd and 43 by Derwin Christian, Tile It Central Sports lost in a closely-fought rain-affected match against homesters Las Lomas Sports Club, which found a new hero in Hospedales Singh who registered four sixes and three fours in a match-winning 63 as they reached their target with one ball to spare.

Set a victory target of 175 off 39 overs after Central Sports made 224 of 44.5 overs, Singh together with Elliot Pitt 20 and Kevin Gangadeen 30 scrambled home by getting to 179 for five in 38.5 overs. Former national player Denis Rampersad with an undefeated 46 allowed Division One champion Ceramic MerryBoys to celebrate a comfortable five-wicket win over British American Aranguez at the Diego Martin Recreation ground. Merryboys got to 191 for five after Aranguez, who batted first, made 187 for seven in their allotted 50 overs.
