‘Grande Big Four bounces off tonight

THE BIG FOUR Championship of the Sangre Grande Basketball League gets underway at the Foster Road, Basketball Court tonight from 7 pm. Competition will bounce off with a match between Pure Hate and Valencia Heat, while Rough Boys will take on defending champions El Carmin from 8.30 pm. The four teams secured their place in the Big Four competition from a field comprising of two groups of six teams each, during the preliminary action late last year.

El Carmin topped Group “A” winning all five matches, while Valencia Heat came in a convincing second taking four matches. In Group “B”, Pure Heat managed to come out on top of the group by having a better point average than second place Rough Boys. Both teams won four matches and lost one.  The league’s organiser Richard Mungro, a former national basketballer, explained that the competition has been organised to encourage youngsters to get involved in sports and stay off the streets. Mungro stated the competition was a positive way for basketballers to engage in after school and evening activities to combat negative influences. The winners of each match will compete against each other to see who will be crowned the 2003/ 2004 Basketball Kings of Sangre Grande.  The losing teams will compete for the third and fourth spots.
