Mucurapo Junior one step away

MUCURAPO Junior Secondary stayed on course to top Group A of the British Gas  Secondary  Schools Netball League with a 25-17 victory over South zone champions Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex. But a downpour brought a premature end to the other game in this group on Wednesday, with Northerners Success/Laventille Composite leading South West runners-up Cedros Composite 10-8 at the half-time interval. South West princesses Fyzabad Composite whipped Diego Martin Junior Secondary 20-15 in the only Group B game contested, as Carapichaima Senior Comprehensive failed to turn up for their match against Sangre Grande Educational Institute, giving the Grande girls the default victory.

Pleasantville surprised the Mucurapo Junior Sec girls, taking a 3-2 first quarter lead, but the group leaders regrouped to lead 10-6 at the half and they were in full control at the end of three-quarters 17-11. National under-17 star Nariba Grant netted 13 of 23 attempts and Annuela Camejo had 12 goals from 18 attempts for Mucurapo, while Aleena Archer got nine goals from 18 attempts and Elisha Bass had eight from 18 for Pleasantville. Goal-attack Cindy Collins scored 11 of her 22 attempts and Gehniel Quashie nine of 10 to lead Fyzo to their victory.  Asha McDowell got 10 of 28 and Onika Borel five of 10 for Diego.

After a 2-2 first quarter, the Fyzo girls led 6-3 at the half-time interval and were 12-10 ahead at the end of the third period. Success/Laventille were ahead from the first period in their aborted game against Cedros 5-2 and 10-8 when the showers came forcing the abandonment, with Tenesia Price scoring six goals from nine attempts and Ghaaliya O’Brien four of 10.  Karen Phillip had six of 11 and Giselle Noel two of four for the Cedros girls. The game will be rescheduled to another date. Unbeaten Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive can wrap up the Group B title today when they take on Diego Martin Junior at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex, while sister school Mucurapo Junior can do likewise with victory over Success/Laventille at the same venue. The other game today pits Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive against Toco Composite.  Games begin at 1 pm.
