McShine eyes fifth schools 5k

TOP Trinidad and Tobago junior distance runner Pilar McShine will be seeking to make it five in a row in the 2004 Guardian General Limited-sponsored Secondary Schools 5k Classic.

This event takes place at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo from 4 pm today. McShine set a meet record of 18 minutes eight seconds to register her fourth title in the female division last year. And the dreadlocked Success Laventille student will be tipped to defeat her major challengers, including Shermain Lasaldo of Excel Composite, Kerticha John of Beetham Life Centre and Tonya Nero of ASJA Girls’ College. And 2003 CARIFTA Games Under-20 1,500-metre gold medallist Carlan Arthur and 2002 winner Sandino Nero will square off for the boys crown.

Toco Composite will be looking to retain their boys team title while a new girls team champ will be determined as Success RC are unable to participate due to a rule-change which only allows for secondary schools at today’s meet. Runners will face the starter behind the stadium’s main stand and proceed along the Maraval Parkway, Audrey Jeffers Highway, Wrightson Road, Luis Street and Ariapita Avenue before finishing on the Stadium’s Mondo track.
