Soldier held, ammo ski-mask and cutlasses seized

A soldier attached to Camp Ogden was among five persons arrested in an exercise carried out between Saturday night and yesterday in Central Division. Officers also arrested three men on their way to carry out a robbery and seized cutlasses, knives, a quantity of 12 guage cartridges, compressed marijuana and a ski-mask. Reports revealed that officers led by Ag Sgt Ajith Persad received information about a car with five men transporting arms and ammunition.

Around 11.30 pm on Saturday, the vehicle transporting three of the five men was intercepted at Main Road, Todds Road. Officers arrested three men ages 25 to 30 and seized the cutlasses, knives, marijauna, ammunition and ski-mask. The suspects were taken to the Chaguanas CID where they were questioned about a series of other crimes in the Central Division. They were later charged by WPC Gail Ann Edwards Ali and will appear before a Chaguanas Magistrate on Monday. During the same exercise, officers received information that a Lancer car was found abandoned in bushes at Todds Road.

A check revealed that the vehicle was used to transport kidnap victim Thomas Mitchell, alias “Chico” who was snatched from his Piparo home on Saturday afternoon. The abandoned car was towed to the Chaguanas Police Station where it was checked for prints. Around 1 am, officers responded to a report of a chopping incident and went to the Chaguanas Health Centre where they attempted to interview a 41-year old soldier. The soldier was cautioned about his use of obscene language and was later arrested after he allegedly continued cursing. Police later learned that the 36-year old wife of the soldier and his 11-year old son were chopped following an altercation at their Cunupia home.
