Narace: Achong left on principle
The PNM says the resignation of former Minister of Labour, Larry Achong, was honourable, but it disagrees with his reasons for doing so. PNM public relations officer, Ambassador Jerry Narace, said so in a statement on Sunday. He said: “It is clear he acted on a matter of principle. He has demonstrated the highest standards of ministerial behaviour in keeping with the Westminster system.” By his actions, he added, Achong qualified for membership in a select group of politicians. Narace hailed Achong as a valuable Cabinet Minister and loyal party member.
But Narace disagreed with Achong’s views. “His offer of resignation seems to be based on a misunderstanding of how best to implement a clear policy position of the party that will serve the national interest.” Labour negotiations, said Narace, were best done between employer and employee. “A Government should only intervene in a situation where good faith negotiations are impeded”. The PNM, said Narace, supported policies like this because they would help the country achieve international competitiveness. Narace concluded: “The philosophical underpinnings and the democratic process entrenched in the PNM permit divergent views which have strengthened and will continue to strengthen our 48-year-old institution.”
