Woman stabs man dead on Frederick Street

TRAFFIC on Frederick Street in Port-of-Spain came to a halt yesterday evening as dozens of schoolchildren and adults ran from a teen who was spouting blood from a large gash to his neck. The youth Lennard Jack, 19, of Wharton Street in Laventille, later died on arrival at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital after he was stabbed in the neck by a 17-year-old female.

According to reports, at around 2.30 pm the girl and her mother entered the Super 10 store in the Frederick Court Mall on Frederick Street when she was confronted by employee Jack, whom she knew. The two had a heated exchange of words and the girl slapped Jack. The infuriated, embarrassed man went upstairs and came back with two knives but was stopped by the store manager. Jack returned the knives and then confronted the girl again who was shopping with her mother. He slapped her this time. The angry teenager then whipped out a knife and stabbed Jack in his neck. The gasping man held on to the girl and walked to the front door of the store where he stumbled and collapsed.

A Fire Services ambulance took the gasping man to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, while the girl and her mother who had walked away were held by plainclothes police patrolling downtown Port-of-Spain. Eyewitness to the killing, Sean Golding, supported the police statement and told Newsday, “I was walking past the store when I was attracted by the screams of schoolchildren in uniform and adults running from the Super 10 store. “I saw the plainclothes officers bring the girl and her mother, while the Fire Services ambulance rushed the lifeless, bleeding man to the hospital.” Visiting the scene were Insp Lester Hutchings, Cpl Forde and Sgt Lynch. Sgt Lynch is investigating.
