Young pregnant mom fined for having ganja
A 25-year-old five month pregnant woman appeared before a Princes Town magistrate on Monday charged with possession of 80 grammes of marijuana. Alicia Simmons pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $5,000 by Magistrate Jai Narine before whom she appeared in the First Court. Cpl Zamsheed Mohammed was the court prosecutor. PC Ashton Singh laid the charge. According to the evidence related by Cpl Mohammed, around 9.15 pm on March 26 police officers attached to the Princes Town Police Station executed a search warrant at the home of Simmons located at Joseph Cooper Road, St Julian Village, Princes Town.
Cpl Mohammed said the police officers discovered a black plastic bag containing 20 foil packets of marijuana. Another plastic bag containing ganja was also found. The woman was arrested and taken to the Princes Town police station where PC Singh laid the charge. The contents of both bags weighed 80 grammes. In court Magistrate Narine ordered Simmons to pay $2,500 forthwith and the remainder of the fine within 21 days. In default Simmons faces 12 months in jail.
