Baboolal: Senators on best behaviour
ALL SENATORS, including members of the Opposition, will be on their best behaviour from now on, according to Senate President, Dr Linda Baboolal. She made that declaration Wednesday night, hours after an incident-free sitting of the Upper House. Baboolal said she met with Leader of Government Business Dr Lenny Saith, Senate Opposition Leader Wade Mark and leader of the Independent Senators Dr Eastlyn McKenzie prior to Wednesday’s sitting and they had “a very nice discussion.” She also said they would be meeting regularly.
“I felt we should meet and discuss some of the issues. I wanted to let them know that we would be following the Standing Orders,” Baboolal said. The Senate President said part of the reason for Wednesday’s meeting with Saith, Mark and McKenzie was last week’s Opposition walkout prompted by her suspension of UNC Senator Robin Montano. At that sitting, Montano repeatedly accused Baboolal of protecting the Government. “There have been issues in the Senate where sometimes the Standing Orders are not adhered to and it may be because of a misunderstanding of what the procedures actually are,” she said.
