Homicide cops probe Akiel’s death

HOMICIDE Bureau detectives have begun their investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of 11-year-old schoolboy Akiel Chambers, whose body was fished out of a Maraval swimming pool six years ago. Although the file from the Coroner has not reached the department, detectives have decided to pursue the investigations to determine who is responsible for Akiel’s death. The file was sent to Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Geoffrey Henderson recently.

Henderson said yesterday that he has passed the file over to an attorney to go through the evidence at the inquest and to give guidance to the police. He said  following an inquest, the file is normally sent to the DPP’s office before it goes to the police for further investigations. The Homicide Bureau is headed by Senior Supt Dyo Mohammed. Newsday learnt that emphasis will be placed on solving the Akiel case. According to sources, detectives plan to question several of the 21 witnesses who attended the pool party when Akiel disappeared, and who gave evidence at the inquest. There is also a plan to question another person, who attended the party, but who did not give evidence at the inquest.
