Man hospitalised after trying to strangle wife

AFTER failing in his attempt to strangle his common-law wife, a 29-year-old Guayaguayare man tried to commit suicide and is now warded in critical condition at hospital after ingesting a toxic substance on Monday night. According to police sources, the man, who lives at La Savan Circular, Guayaguayare, had been separated for the last four months from his common-law wife Maria Marcano, 27, but still paid a visit around 10.30 pm to her Caratal Road, Gasparillo home.

During the visit, an argument ensued with the man accusing Marcano of infidelity. The man reportedly took up a length of rope and started strangling Marcano, who fought back and managed to escape. The man then consumed a chemical substance used for killing ticks and lice. Hours later, when Marcano returned home and cautiously looked inside, she saw the man lying unconscious on the floor with thick froth seeping from his mouth. A report was made to the police and an EHS ambulance took the man to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was treated and remains warded in critical condition at Ward 12. Police sources said if the man survives, he will face a series of charges stemming from the incident. PC Mohan of Gasparillo Police Station is spearheading investigations.
