DPP orders inquest into police killing of hunter
CRYSTAL Rodriguez, the wife of hunter Christopher Khanhai who was shot dead in the Lalaja forest in Blanchisseuse on January 7 by a police officer, is elated that the Director of Public Prosecutions has ordered an investigation into the death of her husband. “I am happy that an inquest has been ordered and now I expect only justice.”
After reviewing the evidence and documents handed to him on Wednesday evening, DPP Geoffery Henderson ordered the inquest at the Arima Court at a date to be fixed. This follows months of anguish and several protests by residents of the area, as they awaited some decision on the matter.
Former Councillor Melan Garcia and Brian Sorzano were both charged with possession of illegal ammunition arising out of the same incident. That matter is still before the court. The North Division Task Force officers claimed that they called on Khanhai, of Walnut Drive, Calvary Hill, Arima, to drop his gun and when he did not, they fired the fatal shot.
