RAPE ACCUSED IN TOBAGO DENIED BAIL

Two men — a 25-year-old Tobagonian and a 37-year-old Trinidadian appeared in the Scarborough Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with several counts of rape and robbery. The accused men, who were not represented by an attorney, were both remanded in custody and advised of their right to apply for bail before a judge by Senior Magistrate Annette McKenzie. Both men are charged with raping a 36-year-old Englishwoman and robbing her of jewelry, a cellphone and other personal items on April 18. They are also charged separately with robbing two relatives of the victim of local and foreign currency, jewelry and electronic and other items.

Charges were laid by Detective PC Earl Arthur, of Old Grange Police. In a separate matter, the 25-year-old Tobagonian is charged with the rape and robbery of a 51-year-old businesswoman on April 10. And in a separate matter, the two accused are charged with raping a 49-year-old expatriate and robbing her of foreign currency and jewelry on March 4. They are also on a separate charge of robbing the 49-year-old victim’s relative of $12,000 in cash. “Because of the prevalence of these offences, because of the gravity of these offences, because of the number of charges involved, you will not be granted bail, but you have the right to apply for bail before a judge,” Magistrate McKenzie told the two accused. Both accused will reappear in court on May 6.
