Police confident of catching brothers’ killer
Police said yesterday they were confident of making an arrest soon in last weekend’s killing of brothers Elton Delice and Allen Sterling in Cocorite. They are awaiting an opportunity to interview two more persons. An autopsy carried out on the bodies of murder victims Elton, 19, and Allen, 21, revealed that both brothers died from shock and haemorrhage consistent with gunshot injuries. The autopsies carried out by Dr Eastlyn McDonald Borris at the Forensic Science Centre revealed that Elton was shot seven times about the body, while Allen suffered three gunshots to the back of the head.
Investigators told Newsday that based on information received, Delice was the target of the killer. Sterling was an innocent victim as was Justin Wint, 19. According to reports, Delice was having an affair with the girlfriend of a gang leader. The enraged gang leader received information that Delice was attending a baby shower in the area with his brother and girlfriend on Saturday and he waited in ambush close to a tamarind tree in the vicinity of Dunlop Drive, Cocorite, on Saturday night. While Delice and others were walking down the hill, the gunman began firing shots in the direction of Delice, killing him and his brother in the process.
Wint, who was walking with the two brothers, was also shot and is now warded at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. At Harding Place in Cocorite yesterday, Sanelle Mathews, Delice’s eight-months pregnant girlfriend, was in a state of shock over the killing and was unable to be interviewed. Relatives told Newsday she has not spoken since witnessing Delice’s murder. Residents of Cocorite said yesterday they were fed up with the spate of shootings and killings and are calling for a mobile police post to be set up in the area. They claimed that a number of young people in Cocorite are members of gangs and they are in possession of sophisticated weapons. Sgt Nandram Moonilal of the St James CID is investigating.
