10,000 to greet Mandela at Oval
THE Emancipation Support Committee (ESC) yesterday applauded CONCACAF and the Government for the understanding shown in using an alternative venue for the luncheon for revered icons Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. A release from the ESC also congratulated Jack Warner for using his office to give the people of this country an opportunity to meet and greet leaders of such status and eminence. The ESC said it joined the rest of the country in welcoming Mandela and Archbishop Tutu and looks forward with great excitement and passion to their short stay. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has said that more than 10,000 primary and secondary school students, as well as teachers, would attend the cultural rally in honour of Mandela at the Queen’s Park Oval on Friday.
The Ministry has requested that the principals contact the District Education Office for more information and tickets. The Ministry said the PTSC would provide transportation for students and teachers to and from the Oval and students would be provided with miniature national flags. The School Nutrition Company would also provide refreshments for students and teachers. Mandela will attend a similar rally at Tobago’s Shaw Park on Saturday before his departure for Grenada.
