Frederick Street closed today for Mandela’s convoy

Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain will be closed to all vehicular traffic today, to facilitate the convoy of vehicles transporting former South African President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Officers from Traffic Branch said yesterday Frederick Street will be closed off from 11 am and re-opened around midday. No one will be allowed to park in the vicinity of Frederick Street, and the Chaguanas and San Fernando taxi stand on Broadway will be moved closer to the lighthouse.


Police officers are calling on members of the public to comply with the temporary arrangements. Mandela’s convoy of vehicles will arrive in the city centre via Broadway around 11 am and he will be driven up Frederick Street on his way to the Hilton. Mandela is again expected to be driven down Frederick Street around 9 am on Saturday.
