New NWRHA chairman promises quality health care in two years
Hugh Eastman, newly appointed Chairman of the North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA), has placed at the top of his agenda the provision of “quality people” to serve in the health sector. “I am of the view that if we have to provide quality service to our citizens, there must be qualified and quality persons on hand to provide it,” Eastman said. Eastman is a former National Flour Mills (NFM) Chairman. He was also on the Caroni 1975 Limited Board of Directors. He, along with seven other members were commissioned to serve on the NWRHA board by Health Minister John Rahael at a meeting held at the Ministry of Health on Tuesday.
Other members are Devati Mooleedar, representative of the public’s interest; Meru Maharaj, Local Government representative; Jacqueline Sabga, physician; Sheryln Monteil, nurse; Valerie Alleyne Rawlins, Ministry of Health; Michael Quamina, Attorney and Jerome Chambers. Maharaj, Monteil, Quamina and Mooleedhar were reappointed to serve for a two- year period. Rahael said this was done to “allow continuity” and to ensure that the new members were aware of what was happening with the former board.
However, the eight were not given their instruments of appointment since there is one other member yet to be appointed. Rahael stated that Cabinet had agreed on the members in order for work to start in the health sector. “There is a lot of work that is still to be done, among them are the PoS and St Ann’s Hospital which have been targetted for major refurbishment within the next two years,” Rahael said.
