60-year-old mother dies in accident
A 60-year-old mother died on the spot while six others were taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital in a two-vehicle smash-up on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in the vicinity of Trincity yesterday afternoon. Dead is Stephanie Bruce, a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle driven by her daughter who managed to give the police only her surname, before being taken by EHS ambulance to hospital.
According to police reports, at around 5.15 pm the vehicle driven by Bruce was travelling west along the Churchill Roosvelt Highway, and were turning into Trincity Road on the change of the traffic lights, when a Datsun pick-up travelling east along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway driven by Ainsely Jerimah crashed into the left side of Bruce’s vehicle. Both drivers claimed that the lights were on green. Stephanie Bruce died instantly, while four other occupants of the vehicle who were trapped in the car had to be removed by members of the fire services who used a special jack to remove the doors of the vehicle.
Police officers from the Arouca Police Station and members of the Highway Patrol responded to calls while members of the Fire Services from Tunapuna and an Emergency Health Services Ambulance arrived later on. Dr Vida Maharaj, District Medical Officer, viewed the body and ordered its removal to the mortuary. Police officers from the Arouca Police Station are continuing enquiries.
