Rape suspect among 34 held in raid

A SAN FERNANDO man wanted for a number of rapes was among 34 persons held during an anti-crime exercise carried out by Southern Division CID officers in San Fernando and Princes Town between Thursday afternoon and early yesterday morning. The exercise was coordinated by ACP (South) Dennis Graham and Snr Supt Dawson Victor with field operations being supervised by acting Superintendents Rajindranath Maharaj and Joseph Nathaniel. CID officers, with support from uniformed officers, carried out the raids simultaneously in several areas of San Fernando and Princes Town.


They arrested a San Fernando man believed to be behind a series of rapes and other sexual offences against women in the district. The suspect will be placed on several ID parades this weekend. In addition, officers including Insp Brereton, Ag Sgt Matthews-Noel, Cpl Haynes and PCs Smith and Samburie arrested 13 persons on various outstanding warrants.The exercise, which followed police surveillance at several crime hot spots, started at 4 pm on Thursday and ended at 4 am yesterday. Some of the persons held in the raid appeared in court yesterday, while the rest will be interrogated and charged on the weekend and will appear in court next week.
