NHA to challenge squatters’ lawsuit
THE case filed by Union Hall, San Fernando squatters is being challenged by the National Housing Authority (NHA). This was announced yesterday in the San Fernando High Court when the judicial review lawsuit came up for hearing before Justice David Myers. Attorney Glenda Edwards told Justice Myers that Russell Martineau SC was retained to represent NHA.
The squatters, whose shacks were broken down by NHA demolition crews on April 22, contend the authority ought to have afforded them an opportunity to be heard in court, before carrying out the demolition. Edwards informed Justice Myers that Martineau was only apprised of the matter on Monday, when the documents were served on him. Myers granted a continuing injunction to prevent NHA from breaking down the shacks until the hearing and determination of this matter. The judge fixed June 21 for the next hearing.
