Militant on gun charge

A 33-year-old soca artiste appeared before a Tunapuna magistrate yesterday charged with possession of arms and ammunition and resisting arrest. Charged is entertainer Brian Anthony Peton, also known as “Mili-tant,” of Upper Alexis Street in Morvant. The entertainer, who was held during a roadblock on Wednesday night, was not called on to plead as the charges were indictable. Peton appeared be-fore Magistrate Gloria Jasmath in the Tuna-puna Second Court and was represented by attorney Samantha Lawson. Speaking on her client’s behalf, Lawson requested bail for the entertainer, stating that he had commitments to fulfil, and also had three young daughters to take care of.

Asked by Magistrate Jasmath whether the accused had any previous matters before the courts, the attorney stated that this was Peton’s first offence. Prosecutors, however, objected to bail, stating that they had not yet done a trace on the accused to determine whether this was in fact true. The Magistrate gave in to Lawson’s plea and granted bail to the accused in the sum of $50,000 with surety. Peton’s attorney in-formed the Magistrate that his producer from Hick Rick Records at Caribbean Sound Basin will stand his bail. While the producer was not in the country, he was due to return yesterday afternoon and would be able to stand her client’s bail. Peton will reappear on May 24.
