Student charged for trafficking ganja
The girl appeared before a magistrate in Princes Town, having been charged on Thursday after a security guard checked her bag following school’s dismissal at 2.30 pm.
The girl was arrested at the Tableland High School which she attends, and taken to the Princes Town Police Station.
Yesterday, she appeared before senior Magistrate, Debra Quintyne, in the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court, charged with trafficking. Though she had less than 1,000 milligram of marijuana, as the charge stemmed from an incident in which she was arrested in school, was rendered one of trafficking, and not simple possession.
The charge was read by Quintyne to the 14-year-old girl that on Thursday at the Tableland High School, she had in her possession a drug commonly called marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. The marijuana weighed 79 grams and when asked how she pleaded, the girl said she was guilty. The magistrate heard from the court police prosecutor, Sgt Roger Richardson, that a security guard noticed the girl acting suspiciously. Upon searching the girl’s book bag, the marijuana was found wrapped in a napkin, when discovered.
When questioned by the security guard, the prosecutor said, the girl replied that the napkin was handed to her by a friend, and she was unaware what it contained. The guard was present in the courtroom. Quintyne asked for a Probation Officer’s report on the girl’s life at home, and at school. She ordered the girl to return on December 12, when the court would determine the appropriate sentence.
