Citizens must decide Trinity Cross issue

THE EDITOR: The renaming of the nation’s highest award will always be an on going and controversial issue with the national community. The Trinity Cross is the official name given to the award, now the issue surrounding the name change is the fact the word “Cross” is a Christian symbol. So for non-Christians it will always be an issue with the award because of the fact we live in a plural society, the name change will guarantee a reflection of the multi-religious society we live in. But the question remains, what will be an appropriate name for all to accept? A former President of the Senate, Dr Wahia Ali refused the award because of the name.

The then former Prime Minister assured him he will give consideration to a name change. Since then, the issue has always been a contentious one, debates on a argument over the name change will always be an issue to the national community. So the question remains, as the debate rages on from year to year, should the Trinity Cross remain as a national symbol, or should there be a name change? Our citizens must decide and not leave it up to our politicians, because there will always be discontent as to name change.
