World’s top A’ Level Physics student cops President’s Medal
DENNIS Ramdass has been described as the number one fan of the West Indies cricket team and can rattle off every available statistic about his hero, West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara. Yet this humble teenager from Couva is himself regarded as a hero by classmates from his alma mater Naparima College, as the talented young man not only placed first in the world at the Advanced Level exam in Physics, but was also awarded the President’s Medal in Mathematics, Science and Environmental Science. The future electrical engineer has already enrolled at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he plans to pursue a degree in computer science, according to proud father Krishna Ramdass. “We, the entire family, are extremely proud of Dennis,” he said, describing Dennis as a “gifted child.”
The proud father admitted that based on his son’s placing at the Cambridge Advanced Level results, he was “almost sure” Dennis would have received a national scholarship. While an elated Myroon Ramdass said her son, whom she described as “very focussed and extremely self-motivated,” admitted to being speechless about the latest accolade to her son. “His sister, Sharon, also won a national scholarship, so everyone was expecting Dennis to do well... but to win the President’s Medal. I’m not sure the news has sunk in as yet,” she said. Ramdass also said her son’s achievement was also an inspiration to his younger brother, Kevin, 12, who also attends Naparima College, saying the young man was “no party boy” who “religiously” attended the Spring Village Mandir.
