Capital city needs to breathe

With the real estate market going guns, agents want to know what’s happening to government’s decentralisation plan to move its  operations out of Port-of-Spain. With nerve-wracking traffic on the morning and evening, real estate people are calling on government to consider seriously moving things out of the city. As it stands now, major projects are taking place in Port-of-Spain, they said, citing the Campus Plaza for government offices now under construction. They said that while the Plaza will create more jobs, it will just bring more people to PoS.

With government shoring up support for FTAA, the feeling, some say, is that the government is trying to turn PoS into a mega city. Critics say such a plan would be disastrous because the capital city was just not built to accommodate such massive projects. What it will do though is have a ripple effect on already soaring real estate prices, they said. “What became of government’s plan to decentralise its operations?” one agent said, adding that such a move will help solve ease the traffic congestion in the city. ‘We need to do something and fast,” she said.
