TUCO calls on Afong to resign
As a result of the alleged assault on calypsonian Lord Relator (Willard Harris) by Board member of the National Carnival Commission, Richard Afong, the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) has called on Afong to resign his NCC position. In a media release, TUCO president Michael Legerton said, “TUCO notes with great concern the physical and, even worse, the verbal (tinged with racial) assault by Mr Afong on Lord Relator.
We believe Mr Afong must apologise, not only to Lord Relator, but he must also apologise for the racial remarks made which TUCO, in this one instance, will assume he uttered under severe strain and pressure.” Legerton added that TUCO’s position is that the Trinidad cultural environment in general, and the calypso art form in particular, is one of an easy exchange of picong, and persons who purport to be involved in Carnival and the Carnival arts must fully understand this.
