Ministry launches youth environment project

The Ministry of Public Utilities and the Environment and the Institute for Future Global Leaders (IFGL) yesterday launched a “Touring Environment Mall Caravan.” In a simple ceremony held at the Fort San Andres Museum on South Quay, Port-of-Spain, various representatives from corporations such as WASA, Petrotrin and TSTT, were on hand to witness just a glimpse into what the caravan would look like. Speaking at the launch was Calvin James, IFGL executive chairman, who highlighted the accomplishments of the organisation, and outlined some of the future plans of the IFGL.

The plans include an environment village at San Fernando Hill, which would include a water dome in commemoration of World Environment Day, 2005. James also divulged that there would be the implementation of three pilot programmes on recycling, sustainable agriculture and sustainable eco-tourism. Also speaking at the event was Kenny Samlal, secretary of the Greenplains Foun-dation. Samlal explained the purpose of the non-profit organisation as one that aims to preserve  wetlands in Freeport and environs. According to Samlal, the group has been active in this regard, and has implemented an educational programme in approximately 69 primary schools. Samlal expounded on the need for environmental studies in schools, saying that the response from primary schools has been quite promising.

Speaking on behalf of Minister of Public Utilities and the Environment, Pen-nelope Beckles, was Conservator of Forests in the Forestry Division of the same ministry, Anthony Ramnarine. Ramnarine emphasised the importance of the programme in promoting the efforts of young people in environmental issues. While he said that a lot of times these efforts may go unnoticed and uncelebrated, the Ministry was committed in its partnership with IFGL, in highlighting the contributions made by young people in environmental issues. The touring caravan will include environmental displays that include posters and pictures. By mid-November members of the public would be able to visit the touring caravan as it moves through City Gate, Trincity Mall, Mid Centre Mall, Gulf City Mall and Scarborough.
