Tarouba squatters’ appeal begins

An appeal against Justice Nolan Bereaux’ dismissal of judicial review proceedings brought against the National Housing Authority (NHA) by Tarouba squatters, started yesterday in the Court of Appeal. The squatters’ attorney, Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj SC, instructed by Garnet Mungalsingh, spent the greater part of the day yesterday arguing his case before Justices Rolston Nelson (president), Wendell Kangaloo and Ivor Archie. Attorney Russel Martineau SC, instructed by Deborah Peake, who represented the NHA, started his rebuttal arguments yesterday evening and will continue on Monday. NHA had served the squatters eviction notices and threatened to break down their dwelling structures located near the end of the Solomon Hochoy Highway in San Fernando.
