Child in hospital after beating

A two-and-a-half-year-old girl who was beaten with a belt on Monday at her Mahagony Trace home on North Post Road, Diego Martin, was up to yesterday at the Paediatric Ward of the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. Police are expected to detain a 40-year-old man and his 35-year-old wife for questioning. Christopher Beharry, father of the child, told Newsday he was not at home at the time of the incident. He said his daughter, Christen, was left in the care of a woman and her husband.

According to the angry man, his daughter was left in a bed at the house to take a nap around midday on Monday. The child reached for a bottle of cream, which fell to the ground. Beharry found out that the child was reprimanded and a man armed with a belt beat the child. A woman intervened and asked him to stop, but he continued. The child later complained to her father about the beating and said her stomach was hurting. She was rushed to the EWMSC where doctors conducted a series of tests. Up to yesterday, the child was still warded and doctors were unable to diagnose the reason for her stomach pains.
