Top cop: only one probe into Carenage killing
Police Commissioner Trevor Paul yesterday denied reports that three probes have been ordered into the death of Carenage teenager Sherman Monsegue. Paul, who returned to office yesterday after a one-week absence, said the only officer assigned to the probe the death of Monsegue is Supt Errol Dillon of the Firearms Interdiction Unit.
He said both ACP Winston Cooper and Deputy Commissioner Glen Roach denied appointing investigators to probe the killing. The Commissioner said he was yet to be briefed about the status of the investigation, but expressed concern over Monsegue’s death. He assured, however, that the lone investigator will carry out a detailed probe into the killing. Monsegue, 18, was shot dead around 1.30 last Wednesday on the beachfront, a short distance from his Schuller Street home in Carenage.
The police claimed that Monsegue and another man shot at them, but angry residents insisted that Monsegue was murdered in “cold blood.” An eyewitness to the killing, who was detained by the police and later released, was expected to have given a statement to Supt Dillon yesterday. That eyewitness said yesterday that he was fearful for his life, but was intent on exposing the persons who killed Monsegue.
