NCC launches 2005 Carnival with street parade
An explosion of colourful costumes and steelbands converged on the streets of Port-of-Spain yesterday as the National Carnival Commission (NCC) officially launched Carnival 2005, the theme of which is, “Cherish We Carnival.” With a two-hour delay in starting time, the wait was worth the while, as this year’s launch proved to be most successful, with the full presence of traditional characters of Carnival. Much to the delight of the eager crowd, Blue Devils, Dames Lorraine, Jab Jabs, Fancy Indians and Midnight Robbers, claimed Abercromby Street together with several steelbands. La Horquetta Pan Groove, Harmonites, Angostura Wood-brook Playboyz and Burgundy All Stars were among the steelbands that participated in the launch. Several spectators were disappointed with the half empty racks of WITCO Desperadoes, as band members did not arrive in time to perform.
The parade started from Abercromby Street and later ended at the Queen’s Park Savannah.
