Educator Beulah laid to rest

FORMER Naparima Girls’ High School principal and educator Beulah Meghu was laid to rest yesterday in a ceremony which celebrated her life as a school principal for 20 years. It was held at the Susamachar Presbyterian Church on Coffee Street, San Fernando. Meghu was cherished for transforming “silly” girl students into strong-willed, independent women. Meghu, who died earlier this week at 72, joined “Naps” in 1951 as a teacher. She served as principal of the school from 1964-1984.

At the service, Meghu’s sister Vilma Dube and Rev Stephen Harripersad spoke in glowing terms about the school principal. Dube said that at the tender age of 17, Meghu gave up being the “belle of the ball” and assumed the role of mother at home. On retiring, Meghu was appointed a member of the Teaching Service Commission, and became a commissioner. Meghu leaves to mourn her sisters — Vilma Dube, Jacqueline Mahabir, Roslyn Sankerali, Hazel Organ, Cicely Mykoo and Carolyn Hill. Minister in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Dianne Seukeran, described Meghu as possessing a “God-given talent.”
