Piarco and Crown Point — are they over funded?
Works Minister Franklin Khan said that the Piarco and Crown Point airports may be “ too well funded” as government continues to subsidise the Airports Authority (AA) in significant measure. He was speaking the 13th regional assembly of Airports Council International, Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Tobago earlier this week. He said that airport charges for landing fees and passenger use were extremely low compared to the operating cost of the airport.
Asked about the possibility of privatising the two airports, Khan said for the time being, such a possibility was “small.” “The reason is that the government feels it must continue to have involvement in the strategic areas of the economy where it can influence long term economic development and for the time being the airport has to be one of that,” he said.
