Maxi taxi driver robbed and killed
Subero’s husband, Doodnath Beharry, 44, a maxi-taxi driver, was shot and killed in what police believe was a robbery gone wrong. Beharry was found dead inside his maxi taxi at an agricultural estate near Econo Guest House, St Helena shortly after 7am yesterday.
He worked the Curepe to Chaguanas route.
At their Warren Road, Cunupia home, a visibly distraught Subero said she and Beharry lived together for the past 21 years and have a son, Shiva, 18, and nine-year-old daughter, Shelly-Ann. “I still can’t believe that whoever did this took him away from us,” Subero said.
“He was a good man and well-known and respected in the area. He wasn’t the kind of man to start fights or quarrels with anyone.” Subero said Beharry was the family’s bread winner.
Subero said her husband, who works on afternoons, usually returned home by 8pm and she became worried when he did not answer his cellphone. A report was made to the police.
Beharry’s body was discovered by a gardener who, on his way to his plot of land, saw the green band maxi parked along the Caroni South Bank Road.
Upon further investigation, the gardener discovered Doodnath’s body slumped behind the wheel with blood oozing from the head, back and neck. Officers of the Central Division were alerted and a party of officers led by Assistant Superintendent (ASP), Jackson, Sergeant Toolaram and others, along with a District Medical Officer (DMO), visited the scene. A check revealed that there was no cash on Beharry’s body, prompting police to believe that he was robbed and then murdered.
Newsday spoke to a close friend of the family who denounced the killing and called for swift justice into the murder.
Yesterday, green band maxi-taxi operators expressed their sadness at the murder. They said that as a result of the worsening crime situation, they agreed to have a cut-off time at night. This has resulted in persons unable to secure transport at night.
In another incident, a 43-year-old La Horquetta man was shot dead minutes after arriving at his Petra Trace La Horquetta home shortly after 9pm on Saturday.
Marlon Motaram, aka Bull, parked his grey van in front of his gate and alighted from the vehicle in the company of his wife, Beverly Thompson. As he attempted to enter the gate, he was accosted by a gunman who fired a single shot at Motaram killing him instantly.
