Pensioner chopped in Piparo
Up to late yesterday, pensioner Solomon Rahiman, of Pascall Road, Piparo was listed in serious but stable condition at the San Fernando General Hospital nursing chop wounds to the head and shoulders.
Shairoon Baksh and her daughter Tricia Ramnarine, who he rescued, sustained minor chop wounds and were treated and subsequently discharged.
Baby Aaron and his father Akeem Awong escaped unhurt. Newsday was told that when the baby began to cry, Awong put his finger in the baby’s mouth so that he would not attract the attention of the man who was in search of his relatives. Newsday learnt that he had demanded $20 from a relative who refused to give it to him.. Ramnarine is the baby’s mother. Police has since detained a 22 year-old man in connection with the incident.
The suspect was captured and subdued by neighbours who took away the cutlass and tied him up and waited until police arrived.
A police report stated that about 2 pm yesterday, Baksh and Ramnarine were at their Pascall Road, Piparo home when there was an altercation with the male relative who it is said grabbed a cutlass and threatened his female relatives. The women along with the baby and his father fled the house with the man in hot pursuit. Awong and the baby went to one neighbour while the two women entered Rahiman’s yard.
The elderly man tried to block the cutlass wielding man from going after the women who were hiding inside, when he turned the cutlass on him. A team of officers led by Sgt Ramlogan and including PCs Khan, Arjoonsingh and Clarence of the Princes Town Police Station visited the scene. They took away the suspect and seized the weapon.
Yesterday when Newsday visited there was blood stains all over Rahiman’s house.
A couch was jammed against the door to avoid their attacker from entering Rahiman’s house.
Rahiman’s nephew Nezam Ali said his uncle is a diabetic and earlier this year suffered a minor stroke which saw him hospitalised for a month.
Ali said: “He is a good neighbour and couldn’t turn away the women. So he came in and he tried his best but he was overpowered.” PC Clarence of the Princes Town Police Station is continuing enquiries.
