Where State continues to fail its people

One of the main ways it can do so is through the management of its human resource base. Unfortunately, it seems our priorities lie elsewhere.

Instead of ensuring that its citizens have the best possible chance of competing on a global scale, the State continues to be more interested in obscure “initiatives” that do not serve the best interests of its people.

An individual born in, say, the US is almost guaranteed a better prospective future than someone born in TT , just as someone born in TT would have a better prospect than one born in certain parts of the Middle East.

It is undeniable that not everyone is born into the same socio-economic context. Race, class, ethnicity, and nationality make the playing field uneven.

It is therefore not just a matter of equality but also of equity.

And it is the State which has the duty of reconciling the two.

It is morally obligated to ensuring that a nation’s human resource has equal access to socio-economic development which can level the playing field. Programmes such as a multi-thousand boat cruise that only has the potential to increase tourism and therefore is not grounded in any empirical research does not serve the interests of the people.

It is a global phenomenon that politicians are generally perceived as self-serving, and our political intelligentsia is no different. Until they continue to serve the interests of the people by being truly committed to diversification in matters of education and the economy, our nation-State will fall behind the thrust to globalisation.
