Cops probe retired cop over shooting

POLICE yesterday seized a semi-automatic pistol belonging to a retired Senior Superintendent of police, who is being investigated for shooting at, and assaulting, his daughter’s boyfriend. The incident allegedly occurred last Friday after the ex-cop found the 23-year-old man under his house at Quinam Road in Siparia with his 19-year-old daughter. After the incident, the retired policeman called the Siparia Police Station and reported that he had caught a man who was lurking around his premises. The boyfriend, who lives a few houses away, was arrested and has since been charged with entering a dwelling house with intent. He was expected to appear before a Siparia magistrate on Monday. The young man told police he regularly visited the 60-year-old man’s home.

The retiree was attached to South-Western Division up until his retirement last year. Senior policemen yesterday instructed officers to go to the home of the former officer and seize his licensed nine-millimetre pistol. Reports state that shortly after 11 pm on Friday, the ex-cop returned home and found the man and his 19-year-old daughter downstairs his home. On seeing the man, the ex-cop became annoyed and allegedly whipped out his gun and discharged three rounds of ammunition at the man. The boyfriend also alleged that the officer made him lie face down on the ground, stamped on his head and beat him. While he was running away, the young man said he fell into a canal at the back of the house. Sgt Basdeo of the Siparia CID is heading investigations under the instructions of Snr Supt Nimrod and Supt Jemmot.
