Deportee makes it to wife’s funeral
MATTHEW REDHEAD has made it to Canada for today’s funeral service for his murdered estranged wife. Redhead, 37, a Grenadian national, got last minute approval from the Canadian High Commission in Port-of-Spain yesterday and dashed off to Toronto for the last rites for the mother of his three infant children. Redhead’s father Thomas Benjamin told Newsday from Grenada yesterday that Redhead flew out of Point Salines International Airport around 1 pm yesterday destined for Trinidad.
Benjamin said his son was going to check on his immigration status for Canada. “Once I don’t hear from him by a certain time, I know he has gone. He told me he was going to buy a ticket right there in Trinidad and get on the flight to Canada.” Benjamin spoke to Newsday around 5 pm. A check revealed that BWIA flight 628 departed for Toronto at 5.22 pm and that Redhead was on the plane for Canada. That flight was expected to land at Pearson International Airport at 10.05 last night. Benjamin said he expected to hear from his son late last night “after he reaches Canada.” He pointed out that his son wanted to go to Canada badly for the funeral and to see his three children. The couple was married in 1998, but he was deported because he did not have a visa to stay in Canada.
