He said of the status of investigation into police involved homicides, 23 were submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution for review and direction .

Pierre also stated that the Professional Standards Bureau, of the TTPS, is also actively engaged in investigating all the other cases .

“During the period 2014 there had been the highest rate of police involved homicides and other matters .

“Nationally over the period 2011 to present, 2014 had the highest rate of police involved homicides, 45 which was reduced by 58 percent or 19 in 2015 and to 18 or 60 percent thus far in 2016 .

Another high point was in 2011 when there were 40 such police related deaths,” Pierre explained .

Pierre noted in the North Eastern Division in particular, “allegations was made that there were 32 police involved homicides __ the facts are that for the period January 2011 to October 26, 2016, there were 27 police involved homicides.” “The highest number of police involved homicides in this division for the period under review was in 2014, when 12 were recorded __ , but this number drastically declined to four in 2015 and one in 2016 __ which represents a 92 percent decrease,” he said .

Pierre said it was important to note that Section 26 of the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) Act, provides for the PCA to conduct an investigation on its own initiative or on the basis of a complaint by a member of the public where an allegation of serious misconduct has been made against the police .
