Freedom after 10 years in prison

Ramjattan was before Justice Maria Wilson in the Port-of- Spain Fourth Criminal Court charged with the June, 2007, murder of Maurice “Bobby” Beharry at the 24/7 bar in Bamboo Settlement No 2, Valsayn. Ramjattan was represented by Daniel Khan and Dianne Mano while the State was represented by Veona Neil-Monroe and Victoria Manun.

Beharry was chopped on the head on Father’s Day during an altercation at the bar. Ramjattan, who was also freed on another murder charge 20 years ago, told the court he was attacked by Beharry, a coconut vendor, with a cutlass. The Criminal Procedure Rules, which become effective in January, and which seek to minimise delays in criminal trials, were tested in the case. Four witnesses testified at the trial.

After being freed, Ramjattan thanked the father and son duo of Israel and Daniel Khan for defending him at his two trials.

He said both incidents were as a result of being around people who were violent and he no longer had an interest in associating himself with such people or being around bars or alcohol
