Boy, 11, stars at Sanfest

This morning he will know whether his singular contribution would be of any help to his school, but his constant smile throughout their performance was proof that he was just glad to be there.

Ellis danced as the butler in his school’s performance of Dame Lorraine Jambourie alongside 12 girls dressed as the traditional mas character Dame Lorraine, dancing to a steelpan rendition of the tune that is usually played by cuatro bands. He stood high atop a chair to begin the dance, and with the wave of a hand ushered in the dancing Dame Lorraines wearing their traditional long dresses, lipstick and exaggerated behinds.

According to Ellis’ father, Wayne Ellis, his son just loves to dance.

“He’s always dancing around the house, and when he watches dance movies, he practises the moves.” The Dame Lorraine Jambourie was choreographed by the school’s dance teacher, Remantha Rodney. Princes Town Methodist competed against seven other worthy primary schools in the finals of the competition, including San Fernando Girls’ Anglican, Harmony Hall Presbyterian, Cedar Grove Private, St Clement Vedic, Grant Memorial Presbyterian, St Gabriel’s Girls’ RC, and St Michael’s Anglican.

They will learn which school won the competition this morning.
