We must nurture our young people

Properly cultured youth become responsible citizens, good parents, effective decision-makers, efficient workforce and leaders of tomorrow.

I believe there is a positive impact on societies that inculcates good cultural values in youth and creates opportunities for them to build character, acquire knowledge and skills, and develop talent and abilities. We must continue to invest in young people, vulnerable communities, and keep their interest high on the agenda, as should any society willing to ensure sustainable socio-economic development and stability. Through building partnerships to understand the circumstances and dynamics of farming and fishing communities we must continue to support activities aimed at giving young people a voice and a stake in society regardless of their circumstances.

As leaders and adults today, we must promote the ideals of citizenship, solidarity, and tolerance among citizens through a variety of avenues for expression across the country. Our conversations on culture ought to promote cultural diversity, preserve our cultural heritage, encourage inter-cultural dialogue, use culture as a catalyst for creativity, and, most importantly, include youth in community- building activities.

This is the distinct incentive which motivates groups such as the Felicity Charlieville Fishing Association and the Tableland Pineapple Farmers Association to go beyond the safety of our shores and the farm gates to support community- based education and awareness.

I agree with Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley’s Divali message that “… filled with the light of hope, we too, can face our challenges boldly, courageously and fearlessly to emerge with a single-minded focus of building a strong, united, prosperous nation.” Let us meditate on our God, regardless of religion, to generate knowledge in abundance, destroy the negativities of life, stabilise the mind and bring solace and joy to our lives.
