“This is an old ID card office and there is no bathroom, no play area for the children and added to that the building is dilapidated.
This building was neglected for more than 60 years and it is unacceptable to have children here under these conditions,” Sydney said. He lamented that, “We are letting the public know today that Leptospirosis is one of the most dangerous deceases that you can contract from rats. If the children are housed in this building there is no way, they can escape from danger.
” He noted that if they don’t catch leptospirosis from rat droppings, they stand the risk of being electrocuted, or if there should be any bad weather, the building could collapse. He said they have written letters to the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Agency and, head of Servol Limited Allison Haynes Basalo, and also Education Minister Anthony Garcia to relocate the children until they can get a new school.
“I am here this morning explaining to the parents that the building will be closed and we will be taking the matter in front of Servol, and the Ministry of Education come next Monday if they do not response to us within 24 hours of the delivered letters.” He continued, “We are going to follow the OSH Act where it states, that where the worker has a union and the union is representing the worker and they see violations we are to desist from the duty and inform all relevant parties of the employer including the Ministry of Labour and we are withdrawing our work at this point in time until they intervene.”
