TT Sambo team to compete at World Champs
The members of the national team heading to the Sambo World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria are Gersome Griffith (52 kg), Keron Bourne (57 kg), Martin Joseph (90 kg), Kelvin Guy (100 kg) and Jeremy Rudolfo (100-plus kg).
The Championships will take place from today until Wednesday.
Minister Smith said, “there are very positive young men across the country who need the support of the private sector.” He further stated that he has seen the growth of Sambo and with its success comes reward. He ended by saying he will continue to support the sport as much as possible.
Also in attendance was the president of the TTS F Jason Fraser, who said, “this is history for the TT Sambo Federation to be meeting a sitting Minister two years straight.” He added that he appreciated the work being done by the Permanent Secretary and the Minister as they have gone beyond the call of duty in the past in assisting the sport.
He ended by requesting a home for Sambo and thanked the Ministry for believing in the Federation.
Also speaking, was injured athlete, Joash Walkins, silver medallist at the World Championships in Casa Blanca, Morocco in 2015.
Walkins said, “I have been into martial arts for 15 years and this is the most support I have ever received from any sport governing body and I am really grateful and thankful for believing in us and helping us in our quest for greatness.”
