Attorney to know fate today
SAN FERNANDO attorney Wilston Campbell will know his fate today when a nine-member jury decides whether he is guilty or not on a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Justice Prakash Moosai will sum up the case when hearing resumes at the Second Assize Court. In the trial at San Fernando High Court, Campbell is accused of paying a policeman $1,500 to have a case dropped in the magistrates’ court back in 1995.
It was a case of “sting” for “sting” the State told the jury yesterday, in which detectives staked out a pub and allegedly caught Campbell when he passed money to PC Curt Simon. But the attorney claimed in his defence that he had in fact trapped the policeman whom he alleged wanted to set him up for filing too many constitutional motions resulting in prisoners being set free. State Attorney Nalini Singh asked the jury not to believe Campbell’s claim that he had staged a “sting” to catch Simon. Campbell claimed it was Simon who on July 18, asked him for $1,500 to prevent witnesses from attending court in a case.
