Simmons shares ‘cane’ at UWI-UNICOM T20

Simmons starred in the second quarterfinal on Tuesday night after he smashed 11 sixes and eight fours for Cane Farm on his way to leading them to victory while claiming the Man of the Match award.

Cane Farm’s total after 20 overs was an unassailable 269/6 as they displayed explosive batting performances from Ravi Rampaul who contributed 42 runs off 13 balls and Denesh Ramdin, unleashing 30 runs off 10 balls. Monroe Road never looked like cutting down Cane Farm’s batting order although Nashwan Lutchman took two wickets for 14 runs in one over and Terry Edwards claimed two wickets for 49 runs, after his four overs.

Monroe Road tried their best but could only manage 209 runs for the loss of six wickets in their run chase after their 20 overs. Ravi Khan made 59 not out off 44 balls and Teshawn Castro made 44 runs off 12 balls but the fight was tamed by Rayad Emrit as he claimed three wickets for 30 runs after three overs. Ravi Rampaul and Imran Khan both claimed two wickets apiece as they went for 32 runs off their two overs.

Another quarterfinal showdown took place between Merry Boys and Duncan-Buggy Haynes United yesterday, at the same location. Batting first, Merry Boys posted 178 for seven after 20 overs. Merry Boys’ captain Marlon Richards made an unbeaten 36 runs from 16 balls, which included one four and three sixes, while Lincoln Roberts made 42 runs off 28 deliveries as he struck three fours and three sixes in the process.

For Duncan-Buggy Haynes United, Jyd Goolie got two wickets for 25 runs and Bryan Charles also managed to take two wickets but for 45 runs after his four overs. In their batting response, Duncan-Buggy Haynes United crumbled to a 97-run defeat as they struggled to a total of 81 all out, after just 13.3 overs. Jyd Goolie contributed four fours and one six with the bat but his 25 runs off 15 balls came to an end when he was clean bowled by Rochard Harris.

The Merry Boys bowler proved deadly, claiming six wickets for 26 runs in his 3.2 overs. Ricky Jaipaul also took two wickets for 16 runs after three overs and Dwayne Cockburn was stumped out by wicketkeeper Alfred off Jaipaul’s bowling for 18 runs as Merry Boys secured victory comfortably.

Harris copped the Man of the Match award for his superb display with the ball.

Club Crusoe, Cane Farm and Merry Boys are in the semi-final stage and await the winner of yesterday’s quarterfinal between Demerara and Police.
